September 06.
We started with the nucleus of the u14 side remaining and, with a few additions, the squad looked strong to mount a competitive challenge in the 2006/07 season. The team convincingly won its pre-season friendly at Rugby Town but narrowly lost its opening league game to Bedworth United. The lads responded immediately by overcoming last year’s double winners, Rushall Olympic 2-0. The side then travelled to Yate Town and returned with another 4-1 victory to finish the month in 3rd spot in the table
October 06.
The lads kicked off the month with the return match against Yate and they secured a 7-1 victory. A competitive local derby followed, and Sutton came out on top with a gritty 2-0 win against a Dulwich side backed by Birmingham City FC. This result saw Sutton heading the Premier League table for the first time. The next fixture saw us away to un-defeated Tamworth and as always the two sides contested a close game. Sutton scored in each half to secure another fine victory 2-0. The side completed a fine month winning again 5-0 away at Rugby Town with a professional team performance to make it six consecutive premier league victories. October stats made for impressive reading Played 4, Won 4, Goals For 16, Goals against 1, with the entire squad contributing at some stage.
November 06
November started with us travelling to league newcomers Stroud FC and it proved to be a tough game. Stroud took a first half lead but Sutton came back strongly to take the points with a 3-1 win. This was followed a frustrating period of 3 postponed games and the team were unable to build on their recent good form again during the month.
December 06
Hungry for a game after the three-week break, a ‘rusty’ Sutton took time to settle in their next fixture at home to Rugby. However, after going in front the lads went up a gear to complete a 6-0 home victory against Rugby Town. The following week saw the teams eight game-winning streak halted by fellow championship contenders Bedworth United. A disappointing performance resulted in a 2-0 defeat. The year ended with more damage to Sutton’s title hopes with a 2-0 defeat away to Rushall Olympic.
However, ‘The Royals’ maintained their slender advantage ending 2006 still leading the u15 table. This was a very pleasing outcome overall, after 12 months hard work by all the players.
January 07
Champing at the bit, the players were disappointed when our opponents Dulwich BCFC called off our first game of 2007. Results elsewhere meant that Sutton remained top despite not playing and the title race gained further spice, with anyone from 4 teams still capable of winning the title. Is it to be Tamworth, Bedworth, Rushall or Sutton’s title?.
Our next game went to plan a competitive 5-1 win, at home against a developing Stroud side. Then followed the clash that would ultimately influence our season when we met Tamworth at home. Despite leading twice, Sutton’s title challenge crashed as with just 8 minutes of the game remaining, our fellow contenders scored two goals to take the game and the precious points, inflicting a 3-2 defeat on the royals.
February 07
Due to adverse weather conditions the team were restricted to only two cup fixtures during the month. Sutton faced local rivals BCFC Dulwich in 2 legs of the Amros Cup and secured a comfortable 3-0 1st leg home win. The team completed their comfortable passage to the semi finals with a dogged 1-0 away win in the return fixture. Meanwhile limited league fixtures elsewhere meant Sutton remained 2nd in the division.
March 07
A disappointing 1st leg semi final saw Sutton unable to cope with the adverse windy conditions and the tie was emphatically settled by Tamworth 5-1 with some clinical finishing. A spirited Sutton shaded the 2nd leg, but the result went to Tamworth, somewhat against the balance of play,1-0.
A 5-1 league win against lowly Dulwich in the last league game saw Sutton remain in top spot, awaiting the outcome of other results to determine their final league placing. With the league season completed, the building now commences for next season.
A friendly against Stroud saw new faces on trial and Sutton earned a comfortable 4-0 victory against Stroud, the game being played on Shortwood United’s first team pitch in the delightful setting of the Cotswolds.
April 07
With all our games completed it was left to others to conclude their fixtures before final league positions could be decided. A resurgent Rugby Town gained momentum to take points off our rivals during the run in, but with comfortable victories Tamworth took the title, with Sutton finishing as creditable runners up (just 3 pts being the winning margin). On reflection the season saw great progress. A winning 8 game spell, including victories over previously ‘tough to beat‘ opposition confirmed Sutton’s position as a side capable of competing at the very top of this division.
Looking to the future, members of the squad continue to develop and are now showing the desire, commitment and ability to be pushing for youth team football with the club.
REVIEW OF OUR 2005/06 SEASON AT UNDER 14
